Berry Marbled Scottish Quaich

Berry Marbled Scottish Quaich

$40.00

A truly one-of-a-kind addition to your kitchen, from our homestead to yours. Traditionally used to serve whiskey as you greet guests at the door*. Each Scottish quaich we offer is crafted with intention. We believe that each hand-thrown dish is unique to the person it chooses, each with its own personality.

No two quiachs are alike, and we aim to keep it that way! This particular quaich was hand-thrown with round handles on our Lockerbie Kick Wheel (manual) using original marbled clay, glazed with a berry interior and a clear coat base to showcase the natural hue of the clay (lead free), then fired in our vintage Duncan Pro Electric Kiln.

*A tribute to our Scottish heritage, this vessel is a modern take on a Scottish-style quaich, which was traditionally shaped like a bowl with handles on either side and used only for serving whiskey or other spirits. Upon meeting guests at the door, the homeowner would hand the quaich to their guest, in which they would hold the bottom of the vessel with both of their hands, then place their thumbs on the handles (as shown in the last picture), then take a drink. The guest would then return the quaich to the homeowner for them to drink. The idea is, that, because both hands are occupied when holding the quaich, neither would have the opportunity to draw out a weapon. This practice was a means of trust and peace much like the modern handshake.

Properties: Food safe, as well as oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
